Website vs. web app: which one does your business need?

July 15, 2026 · 5 min read · IQ Code Labs

Clients often come to us asking for a "website" and describing a web app, or the reverse. The distinction matters because it changes the timeline, the budget, and even which team you should hire.

The simple test

A website informs and persuades: it tells people who you are, what you offer, and gets them to call, book, or buy. A web app does work: users log in, create things, manage data, and come back daily. If your users need accounts and their screens differ from each other, you're building an app.

Why it changes the project

  • Websites are content-heavy: design, copywriting, and SEO carry the value.
  • Web apps are logic-heavy: databases, permissions, and edge cases carry the cost.
  • Websites launch in weeks; apps are measured in months and evolve in versions.
  • Apps need ongoing engineering after launch, so plan for a partner, not a hand-off.

Start smaller than you think

The best-performing app projects we've built started as a website plus one high-value workflow: a booking flow, a quote calculator, a client portal. Prove the demand, then invest. Big-bang builds that try to do everything on day one are where budgets go to die.
